What is SASY?

The Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara neighborhood (or sometimes simply 'Schenk-Atwood') is located on the near-east side of Madison, Wisconsin. It stretches from the Yahara River on the west to the Starkweather Creek on the east, from East Washington Avenue on the north to Lake Monona on the south.

The SASY Neighborhood Assocation was formed in 1999. The neighborhood assocation works with our Districts 6 and 15 Alders on the Madison Common Council to represent the interests of neighborhood residents, businesses and organizations.  

SASY's mission is posted here.  SASY activities include:

• Encouraging resident communication through our email discussion group.
• Hosting monthly SASY council meetings.
• Hosting meetings on current topics of interest to residents.
• Meeting with our alders, city and business staff to make sure residents concerns are addressed.
• Organizing residents interested in common goals, via SASY committees and other ad hoc groups.
• Celebrating the Summer and Winter Solstice in Olbrich Park.
• Joining in the fun at Atwood's Summer Fest.

SASY has worked on a variety of projects to better our neighborhood. A few of our efforts have included:

• Bike path safety patrol
• Business development consistent with the neighborhood plan, including the Schenk-Atwood Business Improvement District masterplan
• Dane County Airport noise and traffic issues
• East Washington Redesign – traffic mitigation and design issues
• East Isthmus Neighborhood Planning Council (EINPC) member
• Friends of Starkweather Creek and other environmental initiatives
• Improvements to Circle Park and Lake Monona shoreline
• Review of new residential development
• Olbrich Gardens master-planning expansion and projects
• Development of the Garver Feed Mill property
• Sustainability initiatives with Sustainable Atwood
• Railroad traffic noise and safety
• Traffic Calming and Pedestrian Safety
• Various issues concerning the health and safety of neighborhood residents
• Potlucks!
